Remember that revolting discussion about women and achievement on Asimov’s forum a couple of weeks ago? I thought of it just now when I read Boing Boing’s report on instances of sexist discrimination by Disney recruiters in 1938 and 1997. It’s not likely that they were the only such instances—though we can take comfort, at least, that the 1997 “but you’re a girl!” response got the recruiter fired.

But I don't take much comfort, though: the guy got fired thanks to the student's finding a powerful male advocate. Some progress: same thing happend forty-some years ago to a UPenn scientist who refused to teach women. Absent such an advocate, what would happen?

No, I've been too busy following revolting discussions about women and [pick a subject, any subject] on AlterNet. ;-) Is the Asimov's forum open, and if so, could we have a link and approximate date?
P.S. Never mind -- I just found Eleanor's post upstream, and also Timmi's "A Necessary Conflict."
